There are numerous types of mental health problems and conditions that affect both adults and children today from schizophrenia to dementia to depressions. Fortunately, a lot of scientists, researchers and doctors are continuously looking for ways on how to properly, safely and effectively treat each of them. This has resulted to a wide variety of treatment options that patients and their families can choose from. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a mental health problem or condition, here are some of the treatment options that you can consider.
Medications are usually the first option used for treating mental health disorders. This is because there are now plenty of psychoactive drugs and medications available which have been studied to be safe and effective for treating, managing and preventing the symptoms of various mental health conditions. Some of the types of medications that are commonly used for these purposes include antipsychotics, antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Antipsychotics are medications which are used for the treatment of disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and dementia; antidepressants are medications which are used for the treatment of depression and some anxiety disorders; and anti-anxiety medications are those which are used for the treatment of anxiety disorders such as PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, OCD or obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is important to note, however, that you should not try to take or give any medication to treat a mental health problem without first consulting a doctor, as mental health medications may cause certain side effects if they are not used as directed or in the recommended dosage.
Psychotherapy is another widely used treatment option for various mental health disorders. It involves the use of both verbal and non-verbal communication and interventions to treat the mental health condition of the patient. Psychotherapy sessions basically aim to alleviate and manage psychological problems through talking and other forms of communication such as through writing, music and doing artwork, as opposed to using drugs and medications. Sessions can be done on a one-to-one basis, in pairs, or in groups; and treatment can last for months or years, depending on the response of the patient.
Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT is a procedure which involves the use of electric currents that are passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure. This type of treatment option is often used in cases when other treatment options are unsuccessful. One particular mental health condition that can safely and effectively be treated by ECT would be severe depression.
